Vision

BUSINESS BACKGROUND

The Buzzworks Group is a family owned business established in 1978 and operated by the Blair family. The primary activity of the organisation is in the hospitality industry. A constant business strategy of re-investing profits back into the business enabled growth from a single establishment to eight highly successful licensed premises. In 2003 the company was approached by London and Edinburgh Inns who offered to buy the operation as a going concern. A sale was agreed for seven of the outlets with the retention of the then newest and most innovative outlet, Elliots Bar and Restaurant in Prestwick.

COMPANY AIM

Customer satisfaction is central to the success of any business and we are always seeking to exceed our customers expectations. At Buzzworks we take a great deal of pride in what we do and aim to provide the best eating and drinking experience in Ayrshire, to be constantly innovative in the products and services we offer and to provide well paid secure jobs working in a stimulating environment.

Presently the Buzzworks Group operates four properties : Elliots (Prestwick), Scotts Bar and Restaurant (Troon Yacht Haven), The Chestnuts Hotel (Ayr) and Lido (Troon).

Education

BUZZWORKS ACADEMY

Download information about our ServeWise Qualifications (pdf 176kb)

The success of the business is a testament to the innovation and creativity of the Buzzworks Group. The venues are completely unique in Ayrshire in the design, range of products and the quality of service. The Buzzworks Group is not only groundbreaking in the products it offers, but also in the level of training it provides for its staff through the Buzzworks Academy.

To ensure that customers are given an excellent quality of service the Buzzworks Group invests capital in staff training which we believe is unrivalled in the licensed trade. Staff at the Buzzworks Academy undergo a series of 9 different bar training sessions including cocktails, wines and barista skills, followed by an exam certificated by Barnomadics. Recent successes include Theme Magazine's Scottish 'Bartender of the Year'.

In addition there are also training sessions available for food and customer service. 2004 saw the launch of a management training programme to enhance the effectiveness and empower the managers, and more recently SVQs were implemented for full-time members of staff offering them personal development and a nationally recognisable qualification.

The Buzzworks Academy has just become a City and Guilds accredited centre. Our plans are to join the BIIAB and look into gaining an ISO 9001:2000 accreditation in 2008.

Current training courses which are available for external candidates within the licensed trade are:

NOCN Level 2 Door Supervision Course (through Skills for Security) Scottish Personal Licence Holders Certificate

Also, coming soon will be the First Aid at Work course which is HSE approved.

Innovation

DESIGN

Comfortable and stylish without being overly designed, none of the Buzzworks venues would look out of place in a major European city. Elliots, now five years old, still looks as good as the day it opened. Every year Elliots gets a mini-makeover to keep the style new and fresh. Now benefitting from an open air terrace area, the design is a state of the art shelter for smokers and non-smokers alike. The bar is looking better than ever with fantastic areas for large parties to celebrate and the restaurant with its warm and inviting dŽcor still draws people in from breakfast to dinner time Ð all year round. Scotts is equally attractive, with a stylish walkway drawing visitors towards a glass walled elevator. Inside, the contemporary space is furnished with natural wood and stone finishes complementing the outstanding panoramic views of the Ayrshire coastline that are highly visible from every area. Perhaps the most groundbreaking of all is Scott's heated terrace with retractable roof enabling visitors to dine al fresco all year round. Such is the success of this venture that an equally innovative structure was built at Elliots in March 2005.

And now with the newest addition, Lido explores yet another unique innovative style. The main feature being the open kitchen, which displays not only the chefs hard at work preparing fantastic Mediterranean dishes, but also the wood-fired oven. The floor is a feature in itself - exquisite mosaic tiles, and the whole interior design portrays the Mediterranean influence.

PRODUCT OFFER

Innovative products and exceptional service have made the Buzzworks Group an inspiration to other operators. Food is served all day from breakfast and pastries in the morning to lunches and snacks in the afternoon and evening meals. Freshly prepared dishes are chosen from an extensive a la carte menu which changes regularly, giving customers a huge variety of choice. With food served until 10pm on weekdays and 10.30pm at the weekends, both venues have tapped into a niche market of late diners. The creativity and range of refreshments on offer is second to none. To promote the impressive cocktail list designed by Barnomadics, special cocktail events are regularly organised with award winning bartenders entertaining customers.

RESULTS

The Buzzworks Group's success is largely down to the entrepreneurial flair of the directors, who constantly look for ways to improve the venues and the product offer to maintain the dynamism of the business. New ideas and potential improvements are discussed at length with both staff and customers to ascertain their feasibility and desirability. When Elliots opened it greatly exceeded the predicted turnover - as did Scotts - providing ample evidence that there was a market that was needing satisfied.
